Periodontics deals with the treatment and preservation of the tissues around the tooth – the periodontium, which surrounds and fixes the tooth in place. It consists of:
It all begins with oral hygiene – without plaque there is no tartar or inflammation. Bacteria in dental plaque cause gingivitis. This stage is reversible with thorough and proper dental hygiene. Gingivitis usually shows as bleeding, tenderness or pain; the gums are swollen and red.
Untreated inflammation spreads to surrounding tissues. The gum separates from the tooth and periodontal pockets form, gradually filling with plaque and tartar. Over time the gum recedes and the bone around affected teeth resorbs. At this stage you can no longer clean the area yourself – the help of a dental hygienist or dentist is necessary.
Once the supporting structures are damaged, teeth become loose and may eventually fall out. This process is called periodontitis. It starts unnoticed with occasional bleeding gums; later changes are visible on X-rays as bone loss. If you notice anything similar, do not wait – visit your dentist.
