Endodontics and Re-endodontics

Endodontics is root canal treatment; re-endodontics is repeated treatment of a previously treated tooth. If tooth decay penetrates to the nerve, an inflammation of the pulp develops – most often manifested by acute spontaneous pain. In this case the root canal must be treated, not just filled. The entire "internal system" of the tooth must be cleaned of infection, properly disinfected and filled to prevent reinfection.

How does the treatment work?

The dentist thoroughly removes all decay and faulty fillings, drills through to the pulp chamber and finds the entrances to the root canals. After removing the nerve and rinsing with disinfectant, the length of each canal is measured with an electrometric device or X-ray.

The canals are then shaped, enlarged and disinfected using nickel-titanium hand and machine instruments, and finally filled – most often with thin gutta-percha points, a rubber-like material from the Palaquium gutta tree.

After endodontic treatment the tooth should be covered with a crown or overlay.

  • a very complex and demanding treatment (in time and cost)
  • the last chance to save the tooth
