Dental plaque is our enemy number one. Without it there would be no gum inflammation, tartar, tooth decay or periodontitis. It is a soft whitish coating on the surface of teeth, gums, dentures and braces. It consists of bacteria, food debris, saliva components and shed cells.
It forms most often in places that are hard to reach by so-called self-cleaning:
Self-cleaning is the natural ability of our tongue, saliva, cheeks and teeth to clean certain areas without a toothbrush – e.g. the tips and outer slopes of the cusps.
Because plaque is soft and sticky like processed cheese, it must be removed mechanically – with a toothbrush and interdental brush, hand in hand with the correct brushing technique.
